Manipulation of sealing against hot gas ingestion in turbine rim seals

This project is part of the research cluster SFB1029 TurbIn - Substantial efficiency increase in gas turbines through direct use of coupled unsteady combustion and flow dynamics.

In order to improve the rim seal geometry of the Rotor-Stator-Cavity at the inner platform of turbine blades, first investigations are performed under atmospheric conditions in a double flow wind tunnel. They concentrate on the interaction between the leakage flow and the main gas flow and in particular on the influence of different rim seal geometries. Based on these investigations, further studies under more realistic flow conditions are performed in the Hot-Acoustic-Test rig (HAT). In addition to the experiments under ambient conditions, significant differences in temperature as well as pressure ratio between main gas flow and sealing mass flow are applied here. These tests aim at reflecting more realistic conditions in order to enable the examination of new geometries with respect to their sealing efficiency.
