Assessment of variable pitch rotors within gas turbine compressors

Variable rotors, as currently used in propeller or open-rotor engines, offer the possibility to increase flow stability, reduce aerodynamic losses and influence the work load. The transfer of this technology into the core compressor opens up the possibility of adapting the compressors operational behavior. In this way an efficiency optimum can be found for the quantity of all possible operating points, resulting in a corresponding reduction of the cumulative fuel consumption.

The aim of this project is to quantify the potential resulting from a variable pitch rotor within the compressor. For this purpose, it is essential to consider different perspectives. On the one hand, the benefits with regard to stationary operation must be examined. Here the economic efficiency of the aircraft, expressed in terms of fuel consumption over time, serves as the main evaluation criterion. On the other hand, the possibilities that arise during a transient maneuver should be explained. In this case, the time required to change the operating point is the decisive factor. In addition to these two quantifiable desiderata, a prediction should be made about the possibility of replacing existing methods of flow stabilization. If all aspects of this assessment are taken together, the question should be answered if a further consideration of variably pitch rotors within the compressor is worthwhile.
