Effects of Fan Casing Treatments in respect of the whole engine performance

The joint research project FanTip adapts the ambitions of Europe’s vision for aviation, documented as “Flightpath 2050”, to reduce the emission of pollutants and perceived noise of an aero engine. These points will be realized via flow manipulations in the fan tip area. Several basic approaches will be combined and optimized by modern simulations and design methods. This helps to define multidisciplinary guidelines of a future fan design.

A synthesis reference model is set up to evaluate the modifications. This is done via the performance analysis program Gas Turbine Laboratory (GTlab) and enables the evaluation of the impact of the fan characteristic on the operating area and the assessment of the overall engine efficiency at design and off-design conditions. Moreover the interactions with other modules can be simulated respectively corresponding boundary conditions can be specified. In particular the application of a variable jet nozzle and its influence on the turbo components can be rated in silico in consideration of the new gab geometry.

Within this collaboration the aerodynamic respectively acoustic design of the fan tip area is carried out by the German Aerospace Centre, while the Ruhr University Bochum is responsible for the rigidity assessment.

The research project is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy as well as the industrial partner Rolls-Royce Germany.
