Investigation of the influence of aerofoil deterioration on performance parameters of a compressor using CFD

Compressor blade rows in aero engines are subjected to numerous environmental influences during their life cycle. These influences can cause damage and aging effects, which can vary in their nature and extent. Their impacts can show in a reduction of the surge margin or the worsening of compressor efficiency.

At this time no models exist, which can depict the damage and aging related effects in turbomachinery components with satisfying accuracy and reliability. These models are based on insufficient statistical information, whose validity for changing design and operating conditions is uncertain. Thus there is substantial potential for optimization for the use of resources in the maintenance of aero engines. The aim of this project is therefore to close this knowledge gap by using numerical flow simulations and deduce correlations.

To this end Rolls-Royce Germany will supply various aging effects in the form of changes roughness on different surfaces as well as changes in tip clearance. The Roughness will be applied in various forms on the surfaces of the compressor. The analysis will be conducted by using three-dimensional flow simulations of a multi stage compressor.

Out of the generated extensive database models and correlations will be deduced, which enable a reliable estimation of the sensitivity of crucial performance parameters for turbo compressors with respect to changes to the studied changes in geometry.

Thereby this project contributes to improvement in operational safety by better predictions of the surge margin of stages by component aging and damage. The gained insights provide for optimized decision making with regard to use of resources and the component durability in the engine maintenance.
